OUR HISTORY
Delmas High School: A Legacy of Perseverance and Growth
Delmas High School did not simply come into existence, nor did it merely
evolve from the primary school. It is a story of struggle, perseverance,
appeals, and conviction—often with the support of individuals and
institutions beyond Delmas.
The first Standard 9 (Grade 11) class started in January 1953 at the
primary school, and the first matriculation class wrote their exams in
December 1954. On 4 February 1956, the foundation stone of the high
school was laid by Dr L.M. Meyer, Deputy Director of Education, on a
rainy day “there on the red hill.” Construction progressed rapidly, and by
9 April 1957, the building was ready for use. However, the official
inauguration took place only in August 1957 during a grand
festival—once again on a cold, rainy day.
On 9 April 1957, all students, staff, parents, and committee members
gathered at the primary school. After a religious service, they marched in
a festive procession to the new site, accompanied by the sounds of the
cadet orchestra. Following the speeches, everyone explored the new
building, enjoyed refreshments, and in doing so, a new chapter in
Delmas's educational history was written.
By January 1965, student numbers had grown to 510. The first Freshers'
Concert was held, showcasing the talents of new students. That same
year, the school introduced its new athletics attire at a sports event.
On 4 May 1974, the expanded sports complex was inaugurated by Prof.
J.H. Jooste, Deputy Director of Education. The facilities included new
changing rooms and storage rooms at the pavilion, a separate clubhouse
at the tennis courts, four tennis courts, three rugby fields, six netball
courts, three hockey fields, a shooting range, and a swimming pool. Plans
were also made for a second pavilion and a cinder track for athletics.
On 4 February 1977, the school celebrated its coming of age. Many
distinguished guests, parents, and alumni—some of whom had attended
the foundation stone-laying in 1956—were present when the headmaster
unveiled a commemorative plaque at the main entrance to mark the
occasion.
By 1979, the school had grown to 539 students and welcomed a beautiful
new pavilion. In 1980, history was made when Delmas High School
hosted its first Inter-school Athletics Competition, accommodating all
participants with ease.

SKOOLLIED
Sal die somerwolk bloei daar ver;
En die hemel sy seën oor ons arbeid laat reën,
En ons sing want die lewe is mooi.
